Job costing: what each job cost and what you made
Materials, labor and other costs on every job, its profit and margin, and profit by job type, technician and month.
Every job shows a Job costing card: what it earned, what it cost, the profit and the margin. Only you and your admins see it. Technicians don't see costs on any page.
Set it up once
- In Jobs › Settings › Job costing, enter your Labor cost per hour and your Target margin (40% to start). Give a technician their own cost per hour if theirs is different. A technician set up in HR with a pay rate uses that rate unless you enter one here.
- In Price book, add Your cost to your parts and materials.
How a job's numbers work
- Revenue is the invoice before tax. With no invoice yet, it's the approved quote, marked Estimated.
- Materials are the price book items on the invoice at your cost, plus materials you add to the job.
- Labor is each technician's hours times their cost per hour. Hours are from Start job to Complete job, else the scheduled time. Change them under Hours on the card.
- Other: under Costs on this job, add a subcontractor, a permit, an equipment rental or anything else, then click Add cost.
A job below your target margin is marked Low margin.
Profit in Reports
Jobs › Reports › Profit shows revenue, costs, profit and the average margin for jobs completed in the period, by job type, by technician and by month, and the jobs with the lowest margin. A job with two technicians is split between them by their hours.
